Trans woman crowned UK Scrabble champion
A trans woman has been crowned the UK Scrabble champion in London.
Mikki Nicholson, 32, only began playing the game five years ago. She beat former world champion Mark Nyman for the UK title.
The player, from Cumbria, won the game with the 86-point word “obeisant”, which means respect. Her other words included “winna” (will not) and “inficete” (not witty).
Ms Nicholson livened up the contest by appearing in a pink wig and pink PVC dress.
She said: “It was a big challenge but I wouldn’t have entered if I didn’t think I had a chance of winning.
“I’m thrilled to have won and I can’t wait to celebrate.”
She will spend her £1,500 prize money on a trip to Malaysia to compete in December’s Causeway Scrabble Challenge.
